Why Business Continuity Planning (BCP)?

Many factors should be considered when planning for a damaging event.  Yes, you could execute a "disaster recovery" plan, but that should be saved as a last resort.  Business Continuity Planning is the proactive way to handle such disasters, not just picking up the pieces afterwards as best you can.   In the event of a disaster, you may think it's all bad why go through the added effort of planning for a series of worst case scenarios?  So, why BCP?

  • Implications on rules / regulations
  • Loss of revenue
  • Damage to critical resources
  • Loss of customers
  • Civil / criminal liability
  • Damage to reputation
 
Most look at BCP and Disaster Recovery as a factor for the information technology department and preventing the loss of data and computational ability.  That is a critical resource, but not the only thing to consider.  You don't want to face any one of those items on the list, let alone potentially all of them.  That's why BCP.
