Protecting Your Resources

When most people hear disaster recovery, they think about resurrecting a hard drive or computer.  Business Continuity (and disaster recovery) is much more broad and encompassing.  Yes, your business may come to a grinding halt without your data systems, but what else could cause business to stop?  Perhaps a plumbing problem that disables your rest rooms.  Since you can't have employees there without a bathroom, business stops.  What's your contingency?  Sometimes there are many things that can stop business as usual that go unnoticed.

In this first of a series of posts on general business continuity we investigate the resources of your business that need to be considered.

  • IT infrastructure
  • External data centers
  • Manufacturing and production facilities
  • Critical machinery and equipment
  • Offices and administrative spaces
  • Critical data
  • Critical records
  • Communication infrastructure (voice, video)
  • Shipping, transport, and distribution

And most importantly, Your people.  Nothing gets done without them and you may have weak links with people having highly specialized knowledge.  Can you function without them?

Ask yourself about the weak links, the "if this broke, can we continue," and "what is essential to run this business"?

Continuity isn't only about business, it's about your home and personal life too.  Don't dismiss it or address it only as disaster recovery.
